Hormone Therapy

With 50 hormones in our bodies, it’s easy for some of them to get out of sync. In fact, statistics show that 80 percent of women suffer from hormonal imbalance, many living with these imbalances without even realizing it.  At Louisiana Women’s Healthcare, our physicians expertly identify and address the underlying causes of hormone imbalance and can help women improve their health and lives through hormone therapy (HT).

What Causes Hormonal Imbalances in Women?

Many causes of hormonal imbalance in women are related to reproductive hormones. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that are produced by a woman’s ovaries. As you begin to transition into menopause, your ovaries no longer produce high levels of estrogen and progesterone. The natural changes that occur during menopause are the most common causes of hormonal imbalance.

Other common causes of hormonal imbalance include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Hormone drugs such as birth control pills

What are the symptoms of hormonal imbalance?

Because hormones circulate in the bloodstream, hormonal imbalances can cause widespread symptoms throughout the body. Symptoms of estrogen and progesterone hormonal can include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Lack of interest in sex
  • Weight gain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Problems concentrating
  • Irritability or other changes in mood
  • Abnormal periods

What is hormone therapy (HT)?

When you have a hormonal imbalance, you have too much or too little of a certain hormone. Hormone therapy (HT) can help replace levels of specific hormones to restore balance to your body.

How are hormonal imbalances diagnosed and treated?

If you or your physician suspects a hormonal imbalance is causing your negative symptoms, a blood test may be ordered to check your hormone levels.  Treatment for a hormonal imbalance will depend on what’s causing it. At Louisiana Women’s Healthcare we offer a variety of hormone therapy options including:

  • Oral medications
  • Skin patches
  • Vaginal creams or inserts
  • Subcutaneous pellets
