Ultrasound

For many women, pregnancy doesn’t feel entirely real until you have your first peek at your baby during your first prenatal (fetal) ultrasound.  Pregnancy ultrasounds are a very standard part of prenatal care. At Louisiana Women’s Healthcare, we offer both obstetrical and gynecological ultrasounds to help your physician take a closer look at your reproductive organs.

What is an OB/GYN ultrasound?

An OB/GYN ultrasound (sonography) is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an internal image of a woman’s uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, ovaries and bladder.

What is the purpose of OB/GYN ultrasounds?

How does an ultrasound work?

An ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive test that creates detailed pictures of the inside of your body using high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound technology captures images in real time and can reveal the movements and structure of your internal organs and blood flow.

What can I expect at my pregnancy ultrasound appointments?

Ultrasounds may be performed at various times throughout pregnancy for different reasons. This non-invasive imaging procedure is performed in-office at Louisiana Women’s Healthcare.

  • First trimester (weeks 1-12): Ultrasounds are performed to confirm the dates and health of your pregnancy in the first trimester of pregnancy (weeks one to twelve).
  • Mid-trimester (sometimes called the 18 to 20 week scan): Performed to examine the fetal anatomy, check amniotic fluid levels and blood flow patterns, and to observe fetal behavior and activity.
  • Third trimester: Assess the placenta and determine the position of a fetus.

Is ultrasound safe?

Ultrasound has been safely used for nearly 50 years to help determine how many babies are in the uterus, the approximate age and size of the baby, to screen for certain genetic abnormalities (e.g., Down syndrome), and for detection of major birth defects. While diagnostic ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to the baby, the physicians of Louisiana Women’s Healthcare respect that this is a medical tool, and we will only recommend ultrasounds that are medically necessary.
